Voice Over Internet Protocol
What is VoIP
VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or phone service over the Internet. Using your Internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company.
How VoIP works
VoIP is a form of technology that, using an internet connection, converts speech into a digital signal. Allowing calls to be made directly from numerous digital devices.
How VoIP and landlines differ
A landline telephone is the traditional wired phone. It connects one phone to the public telephone switch network through physical phone lines otherwise known as PSTN or POTS. VoIP on the other hand, uses a dedicated IP phone to make calls using IP over the Internet.
Internet requirements
In order to achieve a voice call of sufficient quality a high speed internet connection is generally recommended.
Call quality
The quality of a VoIP voice call is dependent on several factors. For example: computers, routers, IP phone, servers, service provide and internet bandwidth can all play a role in the quality of a call.
Call stability
The reliability of VoIP calls can be illustrated by the percentage of time where the VoIP technology continues to work. It is understood that on average a VoIP connection will only be down for 6 minutes a year.
